57 Lawyers Elevated to Senior Advocate of Nigeria Rank

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 57 lawyers to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The decision was made at the committee’s 169th plenary session held Thursday in Abuja, under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

Out of the newly appointed SANs, 56 were elevated in the advocate category, while one — Professor Chima Ubanyionwu — was honoured in the academic category.

Only two women made the list this year: Mrs. Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya, Chair of the NBA 2024 Annual General Conference Planning Committee, and Mrs. Chinyere Ekene Moneme.

Other notable appointees include: Ikechukwu Uwanna, Attorney General of Abia State and former NBA Lagos Branch Chairman, Labaran Magaji, immediate past Attorney General of Nasarawa State and current Secretary to the State Government, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, Attorney General of Osun State.

The LPPC confirmed that all three petitions filed against some applicants were dismissed after being found to lack merit.

The swearing-in ceremony for the 2025 SAN appointees is scheduled for Monday, September 29.

The SAN rank is conferred as a mark of professional excellence on legal practitioners who have demonstrated outstanding distinction in advocacy or academic legal scholarship.

All appointees are required to attend and complete the mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme in line with directives from the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN).
