Amazon is closing its artificial intelligence lab in Shanghai, according to a Financial Times report on Wednesday.
The move comes as the tech giant joins other major firms like Microsoft and Meta in cutting jobs worldwide while ramping up investments in AI.
Wang Minjie, a scientist at the Shanghai lab, said the team is “being dissolved due to strategic adjustments amid US-China tensions,” according to a WeChat post cited by the Financial Times.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) established the Shanghai lab in 2018. Although exact staffing numbers are unclear, the report noted that AWS once employed over 1,000 people in China at its peak.
The closure reflects growing geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing, with increased U.S. scrutiny of American companies operating in China.
