The Federal Government has announced a 30-day emergency timeline to complete repairs on the damaged Keffi flyover in Nasarawa State, following the collapse of one of its beams caused by a collision with an overloaded truck.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this during an inspection tour of the site on Sunday, after the incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, 2025, when a trailer carrying an excavator struck the flyover.

According to a statement by Mohammed Ahmed, Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, the impact of the collision completely dislodged one beam and seriously damaged two others. The crash also resulted in the deaths of two persons, with two others sustaining serious injuries.

In response, the ministry, led by Permanent Secretary Olufunso Adebiyi and senior engineers, carried out an immediate assessment of the damage. A section of the bridge was promptly closed to traffic to prevent further structural compromise and ensure public safety.

“The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has inspected the damaged flyover at Keffi caused by an overburdened truck carrying an excavator,” the statement read.

“One beam has completely fallen, damaging the walkway and parapet. Two other beams remain intact but visibly affected. As a precaution, the overpass is closed, though the underpass has been cleared and reopened.”

Umahi confirmed that the ministry has directed CGC Nigeria Limited, the contractor currently handling federal road projects in the Federal Capital Territory, to immediately begin redesigning and moulding a replacement beam for the flyover.

The repair process is projected to last 30 days, after which a structural strength test will be conducted before reinstallation.

“The Federal Government is treating this as an emergency. We are sourcing funds through an intervention window while awaiting full releases,” Umahi said.
“President Bola Tinubu has been briefed and has directed immediate remedial work.”

The minister also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public of the government’s commitment to ensuring such accidents do not recur.

“We deeply sympathise with those who lost their loved ones or sustained injuries in the incident. Measures will be strengthened to prevent future occurrences,” he added.

Umahi was accompanied on the inspection by senior ministry officials, including Mohammed Ahmed, Deputy Director of Design and Bridges Musa Seidu, and Yakubu Usman, the Federal Controller of Works in the FCT.

The Keffi flyover is a vital component of the transport corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory to Nasarawa and other North-Central states. The Ministry of Works reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with contractors and stakeholders to ensure a swift, safe, and durable reconstruction.
