WAFCON 2024: South Africa set up semi-final clash with Nigeria

South Africa have booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, setting up a high-stakes showdown with arch-rivals Nigeria at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

Banyana Banyana battled to a hard-fought 4–1 victory on penalties over Senegal in Saturday’s quarter-final after a goalless stalemate in regulation and extra time.

Their semi-final opponents, Nigeria’s Super Falcons, had already advanced a day earlier with a dominant 5–0 win over Zambia’s Copper Queens, extending their unbeaten run in the tournament.

With all quarter-final matches concluded, the focus now shifts to the semi-finals—headlined by the clash between two of the continent’s powerhouses: Nigeria and South Africa.

The two sides last met at WAFCON 2022, also held in Morocco, where South Africa edged the Super Falcons 1–0 in the group stage. That win came as redemption for Banyana Banyana, who had suffered a heartbreaking loss to Nigeria in the 2018 WAFCON final.

Nigeria enter Tuesday’s encounter in formidable form—scoring eight goals and conceding none across four matches—a testament to their attacking prowess and rock-solid defense.

In the other semi-final, Ghana’s Black Queens will take on tournament hosts Morocco, also on Tuesday.
