The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that the agency is currently investigating 18 sitting governors across Nigeria.
Olukoyede made the revelation during a sensitization programme on Friday.
“As I’m talking to you, we are investigating about 18 serving governors. When they leave office, we’ll move to the next level,” he said.
The EFCC chairman also shared a striking anecdote involving a former governor who fled to the UK a day after handing over power, in a bid to evade arrest.
“While he was still under investigation, he traveled to England the day after leaving office,” Olukoyede explained. “He organised a birthday party and started spraying pound sterling notes — £50s and £10s — during the event.”
According to Olukoyede, the hotel manager, alarmed by the display, suspected the former governor was mentally unstable and called emergency services.
“When the Metropolitan Police arrived, they were told he wasn’t mad — just a former Nigerian governor,” he said, adding that two serving governors at the party intervened to clarify the situation.
Olukoyede emphasized that the EFCC does not wait for governors to leave office before commencing investigations.
