Shettima, Gbajabiamila arrive in London to receive Buhari’s body

Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, have arrived at the London Clinic in the United Kingdom to receive the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday.

The two senior officials are leading the Nigerian government delegation to London, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive on Sunday evening.

Upon arrival on Monday morning, the Nigerian delegation was received by Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and other high-ranking officials.

President Tinubu had instructed Vice President Shettima and Gbajabiamila to oversee arrangements for the return of Buhari’s body to Nigeria for burial. He also ordered national flags to be flown at half-staff in honour of the late president, while extending heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family.

Former President Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday in London after a prolonged illness.

Born in Katsina State in Nigeria’s North-West, Buhari served as the country’s democratically elected president from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023. Prior to that, he was Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
