Lagosians head to polls for LG, councillorship elections

No fewer than 139 candidates from 10 political parties will contest for 57 chairmanship seats in the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025, across Lagos State.

Additionally, 842 candidates representing 14 political parties are vying for 376 councillorship positions in the state’s legislative wards.

According to a document obtained from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), 15 out of the 19 political parties that initially showed interest in the elections submitted candidate lists ahead of the polls.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party in the state, is the only party fielding candidates in all 57 local councils and 376 wards—making it the most widely represented party in the contest.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) follows, with candidates contesting in 45 councils and 259 wards.

The Labour Party has fielded 22 chairmanship and 130 councillorship candidates, while the Zenith Labour Party is represented by six chairmanship and 21 councillorship candidates.

Other parties with approved candidates, as listed by LASIEC, include Accord; African Action Congress; Action Alliance; Allied People’s Movement; All Progressives Grand Alliance; Social Democratic Party; National Rescue Movement, Young Progressive Party; Youth Party; Action Peoples Party; and African Democratic Congress.
