Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party (LP), stating that his involvement in the emerging opposition coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is not an act of disloyalty.
Obi, who was a guest on Sunday Politics, clarified that the coalition’s objective is to unite opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general election in a bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I remain a member of the Labour Party,” Obi said. “The coalition has simply adopted a platform—ADC—for the 2027 elections as a strategic move to work together for Nigeria’s future. That does not amount to anti-party activity.”
He explained that the coalition is still in its formative stages and will likely include more parties and individuals in the coming months.
“We’re building a broad-based alliance focused on delivering competent leadership with character and capacity,” he said. “As with previous coalitions, there could be a name change or realignment closer to the election.”
Responding to concerns about loyalty, Obi added “No, there is no anti-party. Remember, we’re talking about 2027, but we’re still in 2025. It’s like saying I’ve accepted a dinner invitation this evening—does that mean I should skip breakfast and lunch?”
Obi reiterated that his priority is Nigeria’s progress and good governance, and that cooperation among like-minded parties is essential to achieving that goal.
