Arsenal sign Spain midfielder Zubimendi from Real Sociedad

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal reportedly worth around £55 million ($75 million).

The Euro 2024 winner, previously linked with Liverpool and Real Madrid, has signed a five-year contract at the Emirates.

“This is a huge moment in my career, the move I was looking for,” said Zubimendi. “Arsenal’s style fits me well, and the potential of this team is clear. The best is yet to come.”

According to The Athletic, Arsenal paid slightly above his €60 million (£51m/$71m) release clause to allow the fee to be paid in instalments.

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder made 236 appearances for Sociedad and has earned 19 caps for Spain. His arrival bolsters Mikel Arteta’s midfield following the exits of Thomas Partey and Jorginho.

Zubimendi’s presence is expected to free up Declan Rice for a more advanced role alongside Martin Ødegaard.

“Martin brings quality and intelligence. He’ll fit in perfectly and be a key player for us,” said manager Mikel Arteta.

He becomes Arsenal’s second summer signing, following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s arrival from Chelsea. A deal for Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard is also reportedly close.

Arsenal, who finished second in the Premier League and reached the Champions League semi-finals last season, remain without a trophy in five years. Strengthening the attack is now a priority, with long-term injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus having left the team without a natural striker.

Reports suggest a deal for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyökeres is nearing completion, while Arsenal have also been linked with Chelsea winger Noni Madueke.
