Resident doctors at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, have announced a one-week warning strike over what they described as unacceptable delays in salary payments.
In a communiqué issued Friday, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) said newly employed doctors at the hospital have worked for nearly six months without pay. The statement, signed by ARD President Dr. Babarinsa O.A. and Secretary Dr. Disu K.B., condemned the trend as “intolerable and detrimental to clinical practice.”
“The Congress observed with deep concern that the June salary window has closed without new residents receiving their first salaries, despite having worked for five months,” the communiqué stated.
The doctors criticized hospital management for what they described as a recurring issue, noting that such delays are not experienced in most other training institutions.
They warned that if the affected doctors are not paid by the end of July 2025, the association will escalate to an indefinite strike.
The warning strike is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2025.
