Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has officially renamed the Kano State Sports Institute in memory of the 22 athletes who tragically lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in May 2025.
At a ceremony held at the Government House in Kano, Governor Yusuf announced that the institute will now be called the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute. Similarly, the Kano State Sports Commission will be renamed the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission to honour the late sportsmen and women.
“These young heroes made Kano proud. They should be remembered forever. Their commitment and sacrifice to the state will not be forgotten,” the governor stated.
The announcement coincided with a courtesy visit by representatives of the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Remi Tinubu, who generously donated ₦110 million to the families of the deceased.
Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude, saying, “We are thankful to Her Excellency, the First Lady, for this compassionate support. These families are enduring unimaginable grief, and this donation offers both relief and recognition.”
He further assured continued government assistance, pledging full sponsorship of the education of the athletes’ children, inclusion of their spouses in empowerment programs, and support for parents of those without spouses.
The accident occurred just five kilometres from Kano, sending shockwaves through the nation and deeply affecting the sports community. The athletes had been returning after stellar performances at the National Sports Festival.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf reiterated that the fallen athletes are “heroes who fought for Kano’s success” and deserve to be immortalised for their patriotism and excellence.
The renaming of these key sports institutions will serve as a lasting tribute, ensuring future generations remember the sacrifices made by those who proudly represented Kano.
