Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the aegis of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), have unanimously welcomed the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, describing it as part of the party’s “continued evolution.”
The decision was announced in a communiqué at the end of a two-day strategic regional meeting held in Benin City, Edo State, and hosted by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
According to a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, the PGF reiterated its commitment to a united, just, and prosperous Nigeria, pledging to work collaboratively to advance reforms, deepen trust in institutions, and accelerate socio-economic development nationwide.
Ganduje’s resignation and party transition
Ganduje resigned on Friday, citing personal reasons. In his resignation letter to the APC National Working Committee (NWC), he thanked President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve as National Chairman.
Following his resignation, Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, was appointed Acting National Chairman, pending a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to formally fill the vacancy.
APC governors endorse Tinubu’s agenda
The APC governors reaffirmed their support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and urged Nigerians at home and abroad to rally behind the administration’s vision for a more secure and inclusive Nigeria.
They praised ongoing reforms in key areas such as fiscal policy, energy transition, infrastructure, food security, and social development. The Forum specifically commended the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange rate unification, and debt rationalisation as necessary steps toward macroeconomic stability.
While noting early signs of economic recovery, the governors called for a stronger focus on social equity through investments in agriculture, job creation, MSME support, and social safety nets.
Security and national stability
On security, the PGF commended federal and state agencies for efforts in combating crime and safeguarding national sovereignty. The governors advocated for enhanced inter-agency collaboration, improved surveillance systems, and better welfare for security personnel.
They extended condolences to families affected by recent violence, particularly in Benue and Niger States, and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the national security architecture.
Governor Umo Eno joins APC
A notable highlight of the meeting was the formal welcome of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, into the APC from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Forum described his defection as a sign of growing national consensus around the policies of the Tinubu administration.
Tribute to Aminu Dantata
At the end of the meeting, PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, announced the death of elder statesman Alhaji Aminu Dantata. The governors observed a moment of silence in his honour.
