Spain midfielder and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati is being treated in hospital after being diagnosed with viral meningitis, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Saturday.

Bonmati, 27, missed Spain’s 3-1 friendly win over Japan on Friday and has been under medical observation since reporting feeling unwell earlier in the week. She later shared a photo from her hospital bed watching the match.

“Talking about meningitis can be scary, but in theory it’s under control,” Spain coach Montse Tomé said. “Aitana is an extremely important player, so we’ll wait for her as long as possible.”

The RFEF said further updates on her recovery would follow.

Bonmati’s availability for Euro 2025 remains uncertain. Spain begin their campaign on July 3 against Portugal in Bern, with Belgium and Italy also in Group C.

Viral meningitis, while less severe than the bacterial form, is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord and typically requires hospital monitoring.
