One dead, three rescued as 40-ft container crushes minibus in Lagos

One person was killed and three others rescued on Sunday after a 40-foot containerized truck crushed a commercial minibus along Old Ipaja Road, near Agbotikuyo, Lagos.

The accident occurred in the early hours when the Mack truck reportedly suffered brake failure and toppled onto the minibus — locally known as “Korope” — which was heading toward Iyana Ipaja.

The minibus driver died at the scene, while three passengers — two women and a man — were pulled from the wreckage with no major injuries and received immediate medical attention.

The crash caused major traffic congestion, blocking a large section of the road and disrupting movement along nearby streets, including Shofunde and Olufunlayo.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the incident, noting that traffic officers swiftly implemented diversions to ease gridlock.

According to Taofiq, the truck driver tried to flee but was apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to the police at Elere and Area ‘G’ Divisions.

Emergency teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police assisted in securing the scene, recovering the victim’s body, and restoring traffic flow.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and urged truck operators to prioritize safety.

“All articulated vehicles must undergo thorough mechanical checks, especially of braking systems, before operating on public roads,” Giwa said. “Tragedies like this highlight the critical need for strict compliance with safety standards.”
