Iranian lawmakers on Monday approved the appointment of a new economy minister charged with addressing the country’s mounting economic challenges, including soaring inflation and a rapidly declining currency.

Ali Madanizadeh, 43, was confirmed as Iran’s new economy and finance minister months after his predecessor, Abdolnaser Hemmati, was ousted in a no-confidence vote for failing to tackle the worsening economic crisis.

Madanizadeh secured 171 votes in favor, 61 against, and eight abstentions from lawmakers present in the 290-seat parliament, according to state television.

Iran’s economy has been under severe strain for years due to sweeping US sanctions, which have driven persistent double-digit inflation and soaring consumer prices.

Following his return to office in January, US President Donald Trump revived a “maximum pressure” sanctions campaign targeting Tehran.

The economic turmoil now coincides with a sharp escalation in regional conflict.

Since Friday, Israel has launched large-scale strikes across Iran, targeting military bases, nuclear sites, and residential areas. These attacks have killed at least 224 people in Iran, including top military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians.

In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile barrages that have killed at least 24 people in Israel, according to the latest figures from the Israeli prime minister’s office.

Iran does not recognize Israel and has long accused it of sabotage operations against its nuclear facilities, as well as the assassination of its scientists.
