The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread early morning thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of the country from Saturday through Monday.
In its weather outlook released Friday in Abuja, NiMet said early morning thunderstorms are expected across the northern region, particularly in Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa States. Thunderstorms with rain are also likely later in the day in Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.
For the North-Central region, early morning thunderstorms are anticipated in Benue, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa. Thunderstorms are also expected later in the day in Kwara and Kogi States, as well as in other parts of the region.
In the South, a cloudy morning is expected, with chances of rain in Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with rain are forecast for most of the region, including Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Delta, and others.
On Sunday, morning thunderstorms are predicted in parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba in the northern region, with continued rainfall likely later in Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, and other northern states. The North-Central zone is expected to experience a mix of cloud patches and sunshine, with early morning thunderstorms in Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT. Later in the day, more thunderstorms are likely across the region.
In the southern region on Sunday, rain is expected in the morning in Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. Widespread thunderstorms are forecast later in the day across most southern states.
By Monday, morning thunderstorms are likely in Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba in the North.
NiMet advised the public to stay informed and take appropriate safety measures, warning that strong winds may precede rainfall in many areas. Residents are urged to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rain, and unplug electrical appliances. People are also advised to avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms to prevent injuries from falling branches.
