Liverpool have completed the signing of German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116 million, comprising a £100 million base fee and up to £16 million in performance-related add-ons.
According to BBC Sport, the final total could eclipse the British transfer record set by Chelsea’s £107 million purchase of Enzo Fernandez in 2023—if Liverpool meet the performance benchmarks outlined in the agreement.
While Chelsea’s deal for Moises Caicedo included a potential total of £115 million, Wirtz’s move could surpass both, should all add-ons be triggered. These bonuses are linked to sustained success at the highest level.
Manchester City had expressed interest in Wirtz but reportedly withdrew due to the financial demands of the deal, while Bayern Munich were also linked to the 21-year-old.
Wirtz burst onto the scene with Leverkusen at just 17 and has since scored 57 goals in 197 appearances, playing a pivotal role in their historic 2024 Bundesliga title win. Internationally, he has netted 7 goals in 31 caps for Germany since debuting in 2021.
A highly versatile playmaker, Wirtz is known for his ability to operate between the lines, play centrally or cut in from the left. His vision, line-breaking passes, and goal-scoring instincts make him a valuable asset.
While his off-the-ball work is strong, questions remain about how quickly he will adapt to the physical intensity and pace of the Premier League. However, his exceptional work ethic and technical quality suggest he could thrive under the demands of English football.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Wirtz marks a bold statement of intent as the club looks to rebuild and challenge at the highest level once again.
