The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arrest of a driver who fatally struck a female pedestrian on Sunday at Mosalasi Roundabout along the Ipaja axis of Lagos.

The incident involved a black Toyota Tundra with registration number FST 222 HV, which veered off the road onto a pedestrian walkway and hit a yet-to-be-identified woman, who died on the spot.

In a statement released by LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the crash was attributed to excessive speeding.

“Preliminary investigations show the vehicle was traveling at high speed when it lost control, mounted the pedestrian walkway, and struck the victim, who died instantly,” the statement read.

After the collision, the vehicle crashed into a nearby livestock facility, damaging its perimeter fence and an advertising billboard. The driver reportedly attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by LASTMA officers and handed over to police from the Gowon Estate Command.

Taofiq added that the deceased’s body was handed over to the police for appropriate procedures, while the driver remains in custody and is undergoing interrogation.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the victim’s family and condemned the reckless driving.

“This tragic event highlights the deadly consequences of irresponsible driving. We mourn with the family and pray for their strength in this difficult time,” he said.
