Former Minister of Petroleum and respected statesman, Professor Jibrin Aminu, has passed away at the age of 85. He died on Thursday at his residence in Abuja.
Announcing his passing, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State described Aminu as “a towering figure in Nigeria’s intellectual and political landscape,” noting that his death is a profound loss not only to Adamawa but to the entire nation.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, Governor Fintiri said the late professor’s life was marked by “wisdom, scholarship, and decades of patriotic service.”
Aminu held several key positions in Nigeria’s public life. He served as Minister of Education, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, and later as Senator representing Adamawa Central. In each role, he was widely regarded as a man of integrity, intellect, and quiet but effective leadership.
“Nigeria has lost one of its finest minds,” Fintiri said. “Professor Jibrin Aminu was a rare breed of patriot and a silent reformer. His contributions to education, diplomacy, and national development are lasting legacies.”
The governor offered prayers for the late statesman, asking Almighty God to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.
He also extended heartfelt condolences to Aminu’s family, friends, and all Nigerians who were inspired by his exemplary life.
“Though his passing leaves a deep void, his legacy remains a guiding light for future generations. May his soul find peace in the mercy of Allah,” Fintiri concluded.
