The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has apologised for the late-night conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in parts of Nigeria, citing a combination of security concerns and logistical failures.
Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, Amos Dangut, explained that the urgent rescheduling was due to intelligence suggesting a possible leak of Wednesday’s exam paper.
“We acted swiftly to prevent the compromise by replacing the paper. Unfortunately, that triggered unexpected logistical challenges, particularly in Taraba, where a delivery vehicle broke down,” Dangut said.
Viral videos had shown students in Taraba and Ogun states writing the exam late at night, sparking public outrage.
“We deeply regret the situation and are taking steps to ensure it never happens again,” Dangut added.
He reassured the public that WAEC is strengthening its systems to avoid future disruptions.
