21 dead, 10 missing in Niger flood disaster

At least 21 people have died and more than 10 remain missing after a devastating flash flood swept through Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State overnight, following hours of intense rainfall.

The disaster, which hit the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities, destroyed more than 50 residential houses and displaced dozens, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

In a statement, Acting Director General of NSEMA, Ibrahim Hussaini, said the floodwaters overwhelmed the area, submerging homes and washing away occupants in their sleep.

Emergency response efforts — involving local authorities, divers, and community volunteers — began immediately. As of Wednesday, 21 bodies had been recovered while the search for at least 10 others continued.

Three survivors — a woman and her two children — are currently receiving medical care at Mokwa General Hospital for injuries and trauma.

Hussaini confirmed that NSEMA is coordinating with local officials to continue rescue operations and deliver aid to affected families.

“We remain committed to providing support and relief to those impacted by this tragic event,” he said.
