Saudi Arabia has officially announced the sighting of the crescent moon, marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. According to a statement shared Tuesday on X (formerly Twitter) by Haramain Sharifain, Dhul Hijjah 1446 will begin on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
With the new month confirmed, key dates in the Islamic calendar are now set. The Day of Arafah, one of the most spiritually significant days of the year, will fall on Thursday, June 5, 2025. It marks the peak of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, when pilgrims gather at Mount Arafat in devotion and prayer. The following day, Friday, June 6, will be celebrated as Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering obedience to Allah.
Eid al-Adha is observed by Muslims worldwide with prayers, acts of charity, and the ritual sacrifice of livestock, symbolizing faith and submission to God. The occasion also marks the end of Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam.
In preparation for the pilgrimage, Haramain Sharifain shared the traditional talbiyah — a declaration recited by pilgrims entering the state of ihram: “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda, Wannimata, Laka Wal-Mulk, La Sharika Lak,” meaning, “Here I am, O Allah, here I am. You have no partner. Verily, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You; You have no partner.”
This announcement enables Muslims around the world to coordinate their religious activities during this sacred season, including travel for Hajj, special prayers, charitable giving, and family observances. Last year, Saudi Arabia declared June 16, 2024, as the day of Eid.
