Tottenham Hotspur claimed their first European trophy in 40 years with a 1–0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao on Wednesday night.
The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when a cross from Pape Matar Sarr deflected off Luke Shaw and into the United net—an own goal ultimately credited to Brennan Johnson for his role in the buildup.
United dominated possession but lacked cutting edge in attack, with their best chances coming from a Rasmus Højlund header cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven, and a stoppage-time save by Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to deny Shaw.
Though the match lacked fluidity, the stakes were high. For Spurs, it ended a 17-year trophy drought and marked their first European silverware since 1984. The win also secured their return to the UEFA Champions League.
