Former Education Minister, Dr Oby Ezekwesili
Former Nigerian Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has been appointed as an advisor to the Club de Madrid, the world’s largest forum of democratic former presidents and prime ministers.

The organisation announced her appointment via its official X account, stating:On behalf of all of us, thank you @obyezeks for joining @ClubdeMadrid. Your leadership, vision, and commitment to democratic values are deeply appreciated. We are honoured to count on your voice as we work to advance inclusive democracy worldwide.”

Confirming the appointment, Ezekwesili expressed her appreciation for the invitation: “I accepted the invitation to become an advisor to @ClubdeMadrid – the world’s largest forum of democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers, who leverage their collective leadership experience to strengthen inclusive democratic practices and improve global well-being.”

A respected public policy expert and advocate for democracy, Ezekwesili praised the group’s continued commitment to addressing complex global challenges. “As our global context becomes increasingly complex, the leadership vacuum delays solutions to global public ‘bads.’ I deeply appreciate how these former leaders continue to dedicate themselves to helping solve global challenges and amplify cooperation. I’m delighted to support.”

Founded in 2001 and based in Madrid, Spain, the Club de Madrid is composed of over 100 former heads of state and government from more than 70 countries. Members offer their expertise pro bono to support current leaders, strengthen democratic institutions, resolve political conflicts, and promote good governance.

The organisation also hosts annual Policy Dialogues and Policy Labs focused on pressing global issues. In April 2025, its Policy Dialogue addressed reforms in global financial governance to better reflect democratic values.

One of its flagship initiatives, the President’s Circle, fosters open dialogue and shared experiences among global leaders while shaping policy direction.
