Afreximbank unveils $1bn Africa film fund

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), through its development impact investment arm, the Fund for Export-Development in Africa (FEDA), has launched a groundbreaking $1 billion Africa Film Fund to transform the continent’s film and creative industries.

The announcement, made on Wednesday via an official statement on the bank’s Instagram, introduced the fund under the Creative Africa Nexus Programme. Its goal is to support the production and global distribution of African films and TV content, addressing key infrastructure and financing challenges that have hindered sector growth.

The statement read, “Afreximbank, through FEDA, is leading the launch of the Africa Film Fund as part of its Creative Africa Nexus Programme. This transformative initiative, with a commitment of up to $1 billion, is designed to revolutionize the global African film and creative industry.”

Managed by FEDA as a private equity vehicle, the Africa Film Fund will provide long-term capital to foster high-quality content production and help African storytellers compete on the global stage.

Afreximbank President, Benedict Oramah, stated, “Film is a cornerstone of the CANEX programme, and the Africa Film Fund’s establishment comes at a crucial time. It will accelerate Africa’s creative sector, which, despite rapid growth, faces significant challenges in funding, scaling, and accessing global markets.”

Oramah added, “Through investments in the film sector and initiatives like the CANEX Shorts Awards, Afreximbank is dedicated to amplifying diverse African voices, catalyzing the creative industry, and driving economic growth across Africa.”

Marlene Ngoyi, CEO of FEDA, emphasized that the fund aims to build a thriving ecosystem, saying, “The Africa Film Fund is about more than financing films. It’s about empowering African talent, fostering cultural exchange, and driving economic transformation.”

Boris Kodjoe, Managing Partner of FC Media Group, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “It has long been my dream to tell stories on a global scale. I’m thrilled to collaborate with Afreximbank and FEDA to support quality content development and creation in Africa and beyond.”
