Prominent business executive and socialite Aisha Achimugu has reportedly declared a hunger strike while in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following her arrest by operatives of the agency.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, her legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed that Achimugu was arrested around 5 a.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the EFCC declared Achimugu wanted in March 2025 over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
On Monday, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo ordered Achimugu to report to the EFCC on Tuesday and to appear before the court on Wednesday.
According to Ojukwu, his client voluntarily returned from London to honour the EFCC’s invitation, in line with an undertaking made before the court. However, she was arrested upon arrival at the airport.
“Our client came back based on the court’s directive and her commitment to cooperate with the EFCC’s investigation, but was arrested upon arrival. In protest, she has embarked on a hunger strike,” Ojukwu said. “She is a prisoner of conscience, and her arrest stands in violation of the rule of law.”
The arrest, he added, relates to an ongoing EFCC investigation into alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
Efforts to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale were unsuccessful as calls to his phone went unanswered.
Achimugu is the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Felak Concept Group, a conglomerate with interests in engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology.
