Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will miss the club’s next two Premier League fixtures after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
Howe, 47, was admitted to hospital on Friday after feeling unwell for several days and watched Sunday’s 4–1 victory over Manchester United from his hospital bed. The win lifted Newcastle back into the top four.
The club confirmed on Monday that Howe will also be absent for Wednesday’s home clash against Crystal Palace and Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa. In his absence, assistants Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team.
“Eddie Howe is recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia,” the club said in a statement. “Newcastle United extends its best wishes and support to Eddie and his family.”
Howe expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support: “A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family.”
Newcastle can move into third place—above Nottingham Forest—if they avoid defeat against Palace at St James’ Park.
