Kano housewife sentenced to death for drowning eight-year-old girl

The Kano State High Court has convicted Fadila Adamu, a housewife, and sentenced her to death by hanging for the murder of an eight-year-old girl.

Fadila, a resident of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters, was found guilty of culpable homicide after kidnapping the young girl and subsequently throwing her into a well, causing her death.

Justice Yusuf Muhammad-Ubale ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, warranting the defendant’s capital punishment. “I hereby sentence the defendant to death by hanging for kidnapping and throwing the victim into a well, leading to her death,” the judge declared.

The prosecution, led by counsel Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, presented evidence that the crime occurred on July 14, 2019, at Tudun Wada Quarters, Kano. Abba-Sorondinki explained that Fadila had told her sister that the deceased was the daughter of a friend who had traveled to Ghana and asked her to care for the child until the mother’s return.

On July 17, 2019, around 6:30 p.m., Fadila threw the girl into a deep well in the Tukuntawa Quarters, Kano, causing the child’s death. The prosecution presented seven witnesses, including the defendant’s statements and a medical report confirming the victim’s cause of death. The charges against Fadila violated Sections 274(b) and 221(a) of the Penal Code.

Fadila denied committing the crime, and her defense counsel, Zulaihat Tata, called four witnesses, including the defendant, to testify on her behalf. However, the court ultimately found the defendant guilty, leading to the imposition of the death sentence.
