Nollywood actress Nkechi Nweje has passed away following a brief illness.

Her death was confirmed on Saturday by movie producer Stanley Ajemba, also known as Stanley Ontop, through a heartfelt post on his Instagram account. Ajemba paid tribute to Nweje, describing her as both a talented actress and his best friend.

In his emotional tribute, Ajemba recalled their last conversation, which took place during the Queen’s saga, when she advised him to “stop.” He wrote, “Nollywood is in tears as we mourn the loss of one of its vibrant stars, @nkechi.nweje, after a brief illness. I couldn’t post earlier today because it still feels like a dream. Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha. Rest in peace, ma’am. You were my best friend, always offering advice over the phone. The last time we spoke was during the Queen’s saga, when you said, ‘Ontop, stop.’ I’m still speechless.”

Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie also shared her condolences, posting a candlelight image with a dark background on Instagram, accompanied by the caption, “This world is really not our home.”

Actor Asa Ikuku similarly paid tribute, writing, “Rest in peace, mummy Nkechi Nweje (Nwanyi Onitsha). You were truly a blessing to us. God knows best. We will miss you dearly, great Nollywood actress. Rest on, legend.”

Nweje is survived by her husband, Dr. Azuibuike Nweje, and their six children. She was widely known for her compelling performances in Nollywood, especially in motherly roles, and has left behind an enduring legacy in the industry.
