The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has announced the release of withheld local government allocations and assured that immediate measures will be taken to ensure timely payment of workers’ salaries.
During a meeting with Heads of Local Government Administrators in Port Harcourt, Ibas emphasized the importance of the gathering in the collective effort to restore stability and foster progress in the state.
The Sole Administrator expressed concern over the economic struggles in the Niger Delta, highlighting that despite the region’s abundant natural resources, its people continue to face significant hardship. “This is unacceptable,” he stated, stressing the need for transformation, accountability, and effective governance.
Addressing the delay in salary payments across local government areas, Ibas acknowledged the difficulties faced by affected workers. “I feel the pain of the workers,” he said, reassuring them that the withheld allocations have now been released, and his administration is committed to ensuring that salaries will be paid promptly.
However, Ibas issued a stern warning that financial accountability will be closely monitored. He directed all local government areas to submit their wage bills, accompanied by the necessary documentation, through the office of the Head of Service. “My administration will not tolerate financial recklessness,” he said, pledging to scrutinize the handling of public funds and take action against any mismanagement.
Ibas underscored that good governance is more than just a slogan; it is a commitment to changing the negative narrative in the state within the next six months. He also stressed the importance of collaboration with traditional rulers and security agencies to improve security at the grassroots level. “You must take the lead in ensuring security within your domains,” he urged local government administrators.
In response, the President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Clifford Paul, acknowledged the developmental progress made in the state despite ongoing political challenges. He praised the Federal Government for appointing Ibas as Sole Administrator, commending his competence and leadership.
Paul also pledged support for peace and stability in the state and called on Ibas to prioritize workers’ welfare. He revealed that local government workers are currently owed two months’ salaries but expressed optimism now that the withheld allocations have been released. He urged all stakeholders to use this opportunity to rebuild trust and foster unity across Rivers State.
