A Pakistani man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting the administrator of a community WhatsApp group who removed him from the chat, police reported on Saturday.
Mushtaq Ahmed, the victim, was shot dead on Thursday evening in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province known for its history of sectarian violence and its proximity to Afghanistan.
Ashfaq, the accused, has been charged with Mushtaq’s murder, according to police documents seen by AFP and confirmed by a local official.
The incident reportedly began when Mushtaq removed Ashfaq from the WhatsApp group following an argument, as detailed in a statement by Mushtaq’s brother. Both parties had arranged to meet and resolve the issue, but when Ashfaq arrived, he allegedly opened fire, killing Mushtaq.
Ashfaq’s anger stemmed from his removal from the group, according to the victim’s brother. The prevalence of firearms, tribal customs, and occasional lapses in law enforcement have been cited as factors contributing to the frequency of such violent incidents.
