Musk says smartest AI chatbot Grok 3 to be unveiled Monday

Elon Musk, co-founder of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of X Holdings Corp., speaks at the Milken Institute's Global Conference at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on May 6, 2024.
Elon Musk announced that his startup, xAI, will release its Grok 3 chatbot on Monday, calling it the “smartest AI on Earth” in what is becoming an increasingly competitive market.

The company’s flagship AI product will go live with a demonstration on Monday evening at 8:00 PM Pacific Time (0400 GMT), Musk shared on his social media platform, X, on Saturday.

Musk, the world’s richest person, wrote that he would be “honing the product with the team all weekend” and would be offline until then. He previously stated that Grok 3 was in its final stages of development and would be available to the public within weeks.

xAI is positioning itself to compete in a crowded AI market dominated by products like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The launch comes as the AI space heats up, with new players entering the field. Notably, Chinese startup DeepSeek made waves last month by launching a low-cost, high-quality chatbot that quickly surpassed ChatGPT in downloads on the Apple App Store, raising concerns about US dominance in AI development.

Despite repeatedly warning about the potential risks AI poses to humanity, Musk continues to push for a larger share of the rapidly growing AI market. xAI raised $6 billion in its most recent funding round in December, supported by investors such as US venture capitalists, chipmakers Nvidia and AMD, and sovereign wealth funds from Saudi Arabia and Qatar. This follows an earlier $6 billion round in May.

While xAI is now one of the world’s most valuable startups, it still lags behind OpenAI. Musk, who also leads SpaceX and Tesla, launched the AI company in July 2023, shortly after co-signing an open letter calling for a pause in the development of advanced AI models.

In related news, OpenAI’s board chairman confirmed on Friday that it had unanimously rejected Musk’s offer to buy the company for $97.4 billion.
