Eight injured in bus crash on Lagos-Abeokuta expressway

At least eight people were injured after a commercial bus, commonly known as a Molue, crashed into the road median along the Ahmadiya section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Friday.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the bus lost control after the driver swerved to avoid hitting pedestrians at a bus stop.

Taofiq explained that the driver, attempting to avoid a collision with another commercial bus and pedestrians standing by the roadside, veered sharply off the road, causing the vehicle to crash into the median and overturn. The accident resulted in injuries to both passengers and the driver.

“The vehicle, registered as KTU 801 XM, lost control due to excessive speed, likely caused by the driver’s impatience,” Taofiq stated. “In an effort to avoid hitting another LT commercial bus and pedestrians, the driver swerved sharply, causing the bus to crash into the expressway median and overturn.”

Among the eight injured—five men and three women—was the driver, who suffered a fractured left arm. The injured were swiftly transported to Ile-Epo General Hospital, thanks to the prompt response from LASTMA and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) officials.

“LASTMA officers arrived at the scene quickly and conducted a well-coordinated rescue operation,” Taofiq added. “All victims were immediately transferred to LASAMBUS personnel and taken to the General Hospital at Ile-Epo for medical care.”

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, through Taofiq, expressed sympathy for the injured and stressed the importance of road safety. He urged motorists to prioritize safety, adhere to traffic regulations, and comply with speed limits set by the Lagos State Government.

Bakare-Oki also advised both commercial and private vehicle operators to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, particularly critical systems like brakes, to prevent avoidable accidents.
