Ibadan stampede: Court remands Ooni’s ex-queen, Hamzat, others in prison

A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Tuesday ordered the remand of Naomi Silekunola, former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, CEO of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, at the Agodi Correctional Centre.

The order followed their arraignment in connection with last week’s tragic stampede at a Christmas funfair held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed the lives of 35 children and injured six others.

Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi issued the remand order after the suspects appeared in court under heavy security.

The defendants face a four-count charge for alleged offences under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000. The prosecution claims the trio played a role in the events that led to the stampede, turning the Christmas celebration into a tragedy.

Chief Magistrate Ogunkanmi ordered that the defendants be held at the Agodi Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions.

The court session, which drew significant public attention, was closely guarded by law enforcement officers who escorted the suspects to and from the court.
