Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti revealed that star forward Vinicius Junior will return from injury sooner than expected, with plans to feature against Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The Brazilian winger had been sidelined with a hamstring injury in November, initially expected to miss matches until the Intercontinental Cup final on December 18. However, after training on Friday, Ancelotti confirmed that Vinicius would be fit for the Champions League fixture, though he would miss Saturday’s La Liga match against Girona.
“Vini has recovered well from his injury. He won’t be available for tomorrow, but he will be for the next Champions League game,” Ancelotti said in a press conference.
Vinicius’ return provides a boost for Madrid, who have struggled in their opening five European matches, currently sitting 24th in the Champions League group standings. The coach also mentioned that defender David Alaba, who has been recovering from a long-term knee injury, could return to action in January.
With Vinicius out, much attention has fallen on Kylian Mbappe, the high-profile striker who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. Mbappe has struggled with form, missing penalties in recent defeats to Liverpool and Athletic Bilbao, and has scored 10 goals in his first 20 appearances across all competitions.
On Instagram, Mbappe vowed to “change this situation” and demonstrate his true potential. Ancelotti showed support, stating, “He is aware of it, and the post he shared reflects that he knows what he’s doing and what he can achieve.”
The coach acknowledged Mbappe’s struggles but emphasized that the forward was aware of his form and progress. “There are many players who don’t know when they’re not at their best level; Mbappe does,” Ancelotti added.
Ancelotti was encouraged by Mbappe’s recent performances in La Liga, particularly his improved intensity in matches against Getafe and Athletic. “His sprinting stats show a significant improvement,” the coach noted.
However, Ancelotti also suggested that resting Mbappe could be beneficial at times. “We have to support him, but that doesn’t mean he has to play every game. A day of rest might help him.”
Addressing criticism of his own performance amidst Madrid’s struggles, Ancelotti accepted the pressure but turned it into motivation. “Like stress, criticism is fuel to try and do better,” he said.
