Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon has voiced deep concern over the escalating crises across Nigeria, stressing that the country cannot afford to endure another civil conflict.
Speaking at the Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos, Plateau State, Gowon, who led the nation during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), expressed his fears about the growing insecurity and social unrest. He urged Nigerians to pray for peace, noting that the country has already suffered too much.
“All the crises we are facing in Nigeria are deeply disturbing,” Gowon said on Friday. “This is something God never intended for us to experience, especially after the devastation of our Civil War.”
He continued, “I have said it before and I pray to God that Nigeria will not go through another period of crisis like we did before. Let us pray that we are now beginning to see the end of these troubles. We must pray for God to touch the hearts of those who are causing harm, and lead them towards peace.”
