The Nigeria Police Force has announced that its Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit has successfully recovered unexploded military ordnance in Maiduguri, Borno State.
In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the recovery followed reports from vigilant local residents. The police deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) team to secure the affected areas. All ordnance was safely evacuated without any casualties or property damage.
The statement further detailed that in the Dala Kacchallah area, operatives discovered six unexploded projectiles and one mortar bomb near an unfinished building. These items had been washed ashore by recent flooding and abandoned by local scavengers. Additionally, at the Gwange Riverbank, a military hand grenade was found and safely removed by the EOD-CBRN team, which then conducted explosive risk awareness campaigns to educate residents.
No injuries were reported during the evacuation. According to Adejobi, all recovered ordnance has been safely removed, and the areas have been declared secure.
An investigation is ongoing to trace the origins of the recovered items and prevent similar incidents in the future.
In response to the successful operation, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun commended the professionalism and bravery of the officers involved. He also reassured Nigerians of the Force’s commitment to maintaining public safety and security, noting that the EOD team in Borno State has consistently demonstrated professionalism in handling and neutralizing dangerous items, preventing potential calamities.
