Amazon is increasing its investment in Anthropic to $8 billion, deepening its collaboration with the artificial intelligence developer, the companies announced on Friday.
This new investment comes on top of the $4 billion Amazon invested last year, when it became Anthropic’s primary cloud computing provider. Despite the boost, Amazon will remain a minority stakeholder in the AI company.
“The response from AWS customers developing generative AI applications powered by Anthropic in Amazon Bedrock has been remarkable,” said Matt Garman, Chief of AWS. “We’ll continue to push the boundaries of what customers can achieve with generative AI technologies.”
The additional $4 billion investment will support the expanded alliance, which includes joint efforts on optimizing machine learning using Amazon’s “Trainium” hardware.
“We look forward to collaborating with Amazon to train and power our most advanced AI models using AWS Trainium, helping to unlock the full potential of their technology,” said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
This announcement follows a recent decision by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which cleared Google-parent Alphabet’s $2 billion investment in Anthropic after a thorough investigation. The CMA found no evidence that Alphabet gained “material influence” over Anthropic.
Earlier in September, the CMA also approved Amazon’s initial investment in Anthropic, determining it did not constitute a “relevant merger situation” that would require further scrutiny.
