World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open due to a right knee injury, the Italian announced on Sunday.
“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner said in a statement published on the ATP website.
“My right knee has been bothering me, and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet.”
The Cincinnati Open begins on Thursday, the same day the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal concludes. Sinner also withdrew from the Canadian event because of the knee problem.
The five-time Grand Slam champion had been riding a six-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level heading into the North American hard-court swing before opting to skip Montreal.
Sinner said at the time that the decision was made to “prioritise my health”.
His withdrawal from Cincinnati follows that of world number two Carlos Alcaraz, who is also sidelined with a wrist injury.
The Cincinnati Open and Montreal Masters are the two major warm-up tournaments ahead of the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, which begins in New York on August 30.
Sinner has not played since successfully defending his Wimbledon title last month, while Alcaraz has been out of action since withdrawing from the Barcelona Open in mid-April.
The two rivals met in last year’s US Open final, with Alcaraz defeating Sinner in four sets to claim the title.
