NIMC warns Nigerians against fake NIN correction portal scam

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians against a fraudulent social media post claiming to offer free National Identification Number (NIN) corrections through an unofficial portal.

The commission described the message and its accompanying links as a phishing scam designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public, according to a public advisory issued on Tuesday via its official X handle.

NIMC assured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure and protected from unauthorised access.

“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission said.

“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” it added, urging Nigerians to avoid interacting with suspicious links circulating online.

The agency advised the public not to click on any unauthorised links and to rely strictly on official channels for data modification, updates, or corrections.

According to NIMC, individuals seeking to update or correct their NIN details should use its official self-service portal or visit accredited enrolment centres nationwide.

The commission further urged users to verify all information through its official communication channels and report suspicious messages offering identity-related services outside approved platforms.

It noted that the warning comes amid rising cases of online scams targeting personal data, with fraudsters increasingly using fake websites and social media posts to lure unsuspecting victims.
