Foreign affairs minister Tuggar resigns

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from office.

His resignation was confirmed on Monday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The move follows a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring all political appointees seeking elective office in the 2027 elections to step down on or before March 31.

The directive is anchored on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tuggar’s resignation comes amid growing speculation that he plans to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Appointed minister by President Tinubu in August 2023, Tuggar is widely regarded as a seasoned diplomat and policymaker with experience spanning diplomacy, politics, energy, and strategic consulting.

Born on March 12, 1967, he has built a distinguished career in public service. He previously served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, representing the Gamawa Constituency in Bauchi State, and has also contested the state’s governorship in past election cycles.

From 2017 to 2023, Tuggar served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany, where he played a key role in strengthening bilateral relations, boosting trade cooperation, and promoting Nigeria’s interests across Europe.

As Minister of Foreign Affairs, he led Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements under the Tinubu administration.
