The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has grounded a Rano Air aircraft following an engine failure and fire scare during a flight.

The Kano-Sokoto-bound flight, operated by Rano Air, made an emergency return on Sunday, June 29, 2025, after the incident.

Passengers experienced panic when smoke was detected on the flight deck. NCAA spokesman Michael Achimugu explained that the pilots of the aircraft, registered 5N-BZY, promptly reported the issue to air traffic controllers, triggering emergency procedures.

Achimugu said, “The Rano Air aircraft 5N-BZY experienced an engine failure. Smoke was observed in both the cabin and flight deck, prompting the deployment of oxygen masks. All appropriate safety protocols were activated, and the smoke dissipated. The pilot successfully landed the aircraft without further incident.

“The NCAA Directorate of Airworthiness has instructed that aircraft 5N-BZY remain grounded pending the outcome of a thorough investigation.”

The spokesman added that the aircraft had already boarded passengers on the Abuja-Katsina route, who would have faced complications disembarking had the flight continued. As a result, the Sokoto leg of the journey was cancelled.

“5N-BZY remains on the ground with engineers conducting repairs,” Achimugu confirmed.

He emphasized, “The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority prioritizes safety above all. Our safety records are clear. While more advanced countries sometimes experience worse air incidents, Nigeria ensures flights are canceled at the slightest safety concern.”
