Bill to convert YABATECH to university scales second reading

A bill to elevate the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos to a full-fledged university has passed its second reading in the Senate, marking a significant step toward upgrading the institution’s academic status.

The bill, titled An Act to Establish the Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Lagos State, was debated during plenary on Tuesday.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who led the debate, highlighted that the upgrade had already received presidential approval, with the bill providing the necessary legislative backing.

Bamidele emphasized that the proposed university would offer a wide range of academic programs, focusing on technical and vocational education aligned with national development goals. He described the bill as a significant move toward providing accessible, modern education that meets the needs of a 21st-century economy.

The bill, which garnered strong support from lawmakers, has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND for further review and a report within four weeks.
