President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday signed two separate bills into law, establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

This announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement released Thursday.

President Tinubu emphasized that these new institutions are designed to address the growing educational needs of the nation while driving research, innovation, and contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth. He noted that the universities will serve as centers for developing professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy.

Currently, Nigeria has 63 approved federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).

In addition to these new establishments, President Tinubu had earlier approved the creation of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni Town, Tai, Rivers State, on February 3, 2025.

The President also endorsed the Federal Government’s takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, with plans to transform it into a federal university.
