As the 2027 general elections approach, the Labour Party (LP) has announced that it will field former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate.

Obi, who was the LP’s candidate in the 2023 election, finished third, behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, vowed that Tinubu would not have an easy path to re-election in 2027. “Tinubu is not going to have it easy in 2027; we are bringing Peter Obi back to show we are serious,” he stated.

Arabambi also addressed the recent departure of actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo from the party, calling his exit a relief for the LP. He accused Okonkwo of lacking loyalty to the party, suggesting that he had been working in favor of President Tinubu and the APC. “His resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish,” Arabambi added. “He should not speak about the Labour Party anymore.”

Defying claims of internal discord, Arabambi affirmed that there is no leadership crisis within the LP, stressing that the party is not facing extinction, as some of its detractors suggest.
