The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), with five counts of alleged fraud.
Yusuf was arraigned before Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kuje, Abuja. He pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.
Following the arraignment, Yusuf’s counsel, O.I. Habeeb, requested that his client be remanded in the custody of the EFCC pending the hearing of his bail application. However, Justice Nwecheonwu clarified that, upon arraignment, the defendant was no longer under EFCC custody.
The judge adjourned the case to February 12, 2025, and ordered Yusuf to be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, until his bail application is heard.
Yusuf is accused of using his position between 2016 and 2017 to unlawfully confer benefits upon himself. He is also alleged to have awarded contracts without following the proper procurement processes.
