Tax bills not withdrawn, senate unmoved by pressure – Akpabio

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio
The Senate has reiterated its unwavering commitment to advancing the Tax Reform Bills, emphasizing that no aspect of the legislative process has been suspended or withdrawn.

During plenary on Thursday, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, assured the public that the upper chamber is focused on fulfilling its mandate to represent Nigerians’ interests and will not be swayed by external pressures.

Akpabio’s remarks came in response to a point of order raised by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, and media reports suggesting that deliberations on the bills had been halted. The Senate President firmly rejected these claims, stating, “The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform that we are convinced serves the interest of Nigerians will proceed. These bills contain provisions that are in the public’s best interest.”

He further cautioned against the spread of misinformation, particularly on social media, urging the public to focus on facts. “We have not suspended or withdrawn deliberations on the tax reform bills. Any attempt to intimidate the Senate is undemocratic. These bills are executive communications, and only the executive arm can withdraw them. We remain steadfast in our legislative responsibilities,” Akpabio emphasized.

Reaffirming the Senate’s independence, Akpabio stated, “We don’t take orders from anyone or any office, no matter how highly placed.”

The Senate President also addressed the legislative process, emphasizing that the chamber is not rushing through the bills. He confirmed that further legislative actions have been taken, including the establishment of a special committee representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This committee will engage with the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to resolve contentious issues.

“We are committed to transparency and addressing all concerns,” Akpabio assured, explaining that public hearings and consultations with stakeholders such as governors, religious leaders, and business figures are essential to resolving any uncertainties. If six weeks are insufficient to address all issues, the Senate is willing to extend the timeline.

On Wednesday, the Senate established a committee to review the controversial Tax Reform Bills. The committee, headed by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), will meet with the Attorney General to discuss grey areas in the bills before proceeding with a public hearing.

Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over Wednesday’s plenary, highlighted that the executive has agreed with the Senate that the issues causing disagreements in the bills must be resolved.

Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented the four Tax Reform Bills to the National Assembly in October, they have faced significant opposition, particularly from the Northern region.
